Recently, the Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) issued the second batch of Major Project funding, and SUSTech’s Department of Earth and Space Sciences Chair Chen Xiaofei - who is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences - and his team applied for the funds for their "Land Crustal Structure Detection of Air Gun Source Technology and its Applications”.
The project was selected and awarded 20 million yuan, the first time a SUSTech team receives such an amount.
The major projects are set up to stimulate scientific breakthroughs responding to critical needs of the country's economic, social, scientific and technological development as well as national security. They often include multidisciplinary and comprehensive research, and offer a support role aimed at enhancing the innovative ability of China's research sector. Applicants must have an excellent track record in the field as well as a high influence and strong ability to lead the research team.
Chen Xiaofei’s team has been active in the frontiers of geophysical sciences for many years and has undertaken key projects and presided over research groups with the National Natural Science Foundation of China, but also with the Outstanding Youth Fund, various international projects, and the 973 National Project affiliated with the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In addition to Professor Chen’s success, during the statement of the Natural Science Foundation of China for 2017, SUSTech President and member of the Chinese Academy of Science Chen Shiyi obtained funding from the Strategic Project of Major Research Program. Other successful applicants include Chair Professor Guo Hongwei from the Department of Biology, Associate Professor Jaewon Park from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering and visiting scholar Dr. Shivam Gupta from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
In total, SUSTech had more than 100 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2017 - 48 more than last year - and the total amount of funding approved reached 90 million yuan, an increase of 218% compared to last year.
