Postech to hold smart city contest with Asia’s elite tech colleges

Nov 6, 2018 In The Media

South Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech) teamed up with Asia’s leading engineering and technology colleges to discover and foster smart city technologies that would help tackle a number of environment issues and improve the quality of life for people in Asia.
At this year’s Future Consensus Forum held in Beijing on Monday, Postech announced that it will hold a technology contest that will choose the best solutions for Asia’s future smart city next year in cooperation with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, Japan’s Tokyo Institute of Technology and China-based Southern University of Science and Technology.
The universities at the contest will present various solutions to a wide range of pending issues in Asian countries and cities like air pollution caused by health-threatening particulate matter (PM). Awarded solutions can be commercialized later in partnerships with private companies, it added.
Participants in the contest are invited to submit ideas from March to October next year, and winners will be announced in November.
“The contest will be the first attempt to develop smart city technologies by universities, not by companies, and students will suggest specific solutions for the Asian region,” said an official at Postech.
The 2018 Future Consensus Forum was held in Beijing under the theme of “Next Civilized City of Sustainable Development” on Nov. 3-5. The three-day annual forum hosted by Korea’s Future Consensus Institute and China’s Tsinghua University invited about 600 leaders from political, economic, business, and technology sectors around the world to share ideas for the sustainable development of future cities and discuss ways to cooperate and make a new urban civilization.
