On April 18, Secretary of Hainan Provincial CPC Committee Liu Cigui paid a visit to SUSTech along with the Deputy Secretary of Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee Ren Xuefeng, Standing Member of Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee Wang Weizhong, Standing Member of Hainan Provincial CPC Committee Hu Guanghui and other guests in a high-level delegation representing Hainan Province.
University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, President Chen Shiyi, Vice President Wu Chuanyue and Associate Vice President Lu Chun accompanied the guests.
The guests visited the miniature campus model at the Exhibition Hall, where Guo Yurong introduced them to the history of SUSTech and the construction progress of campus phase Ⅰ & Ⅱ. She expressed the university’s gratitude towards the considerable support from the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee and Government, as well as the Shenzhen Municipal CPC Committee and Government.
Chairperson Guo also pointed out SUSTech’s focus on fostering talents, improving curriculum, and becoming a high-level international research-based “Double First-Class” university, which could lead to the university’s think-tank status in the development of Shenzhen, Guangdong and South China. President Chen followed up by telling the guests about SUSTech’s development strategies, such as global recruitment of academic staff, top-level graduate school education, and university policy reform.
Secretary Liu Cigui acknowledged the significant achievements and influential impacts that SUSTech has made so far, which could very well be a new path and model for university development across China in his opinion. Since China’s President Xi Jinping has encouraged Hainan Province to build campuses or research institutes of well-known universities on Hainan Island, Hainan will implement the instruction and improve the status of education in the province. Secretary of Shenzhen Municipal CPC Committee Wang Weizhong responded to Liu’s remarks by reassuring the guests that Shenzhen will help Hainan to achieve this goal.
Before leaving the campus, Liu Cigui and other guests took a close look inside the Pico Center in the Materials Characterization and Preparation Building. As a dedicated electron microscopy center, its world-class equipment can support the university’s research in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials, and electronics.
