The 8th China International New Media Short Film Festival was officially kicked off at SUSTech on November 29th, the second year it is hosted on the campus.
The festival was founded in 2010 and is the first national-level and international short film festival in China with more than 4,000 short films from more than 100 countries and regions screened each year. It is affiliated with the Beijing International Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, forming China's three major international film and television culture events. The festival aims to encourage outstanding new talents at home and abroad to create short videos, discover and support film and television creativity, incubate high-quality film and television projects, promote the integration of film and television and new media industries, and promote international cultural exchange and cooperation.
The College Day is an important part of the Festival. The event is organized by the Committee of China’s International New Media Short Film Festival and the Shenzhen People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the one-minute video competition committee, the Shenzhen International Friendship-City University League, the Southern University of Science and Technology, Communication University of China and Shenzhen Time Network Media Co., Ltd.
During the opening ceremony held in the First Research Hall’s lecture auditorium, SUSTech’s University Council Vice-Chairperson Li Fengliang, Faculty of Journalism and Communication of University of China Party Secretary Hu Fang, Shenzhen Media Group Deputy General Manager Zheng Dingwen, Shenzhen Time Network Media General Manager Jin Zhenghua and Shenzhen University, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Shenzhen Polytechnic, Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology, Jinan University, Shenzhen Tourism College, Qinghua Berkeley Shenzhen College representatives and special guests, film and television artists, as well as hundreds of college students were among the audience.
Li Fengliang’s speech
At the opening ceremony, Li Fengliang expressed his welcome to the guests and students who came for the festival. He said that SUSTech was dedicated to cultivating top-notch talents with "patriotic sentiments, global vision, comprehensive literacy and innovative capabilities", and had set up the Humanities Center, Social Science Center and Art Center in order to cultivate the students’ artistic sense. He said that the short film festival is an important platform for stimulating talent, creating and exchanging ideas and provoking new insights for students. It provides young people around the world with life experience, exchange of thoughts and emotions, and it is important to continue to work hard to promote art and film in colleges and universities as a platform for friendly exchanges.
Hu Fang’s speech
On behalf of Communication University of China, Hu Fang congratulated the opening of the Festival. She said that the activities organized at the festival were an important sign of the cooperation and mutually beneficial relationship of joint university and company projects, and that this not only sets the stage for young scholars to spread Chinese culture, but also serves as a platform for governments, the industry and universities to collaborate and innovate ever more.
Four special guests were invited to the opening day - Judge Zhuo Botang, Hong Kong film critic for the short film festival, and Valinho Podalelev, director of the Office of International Affairs of the Russian Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences in Samara, as well as two world-renowned film and television directors, screenwriter Paul Brown and Li Yang, who gave talks on "how to tell a good story" and "director's responsibility" respectively.
The four-day festival includes short film screenings as well as master-classes and lectures by prominent figures of the film industry of China and abroad. The screenings are categorized into themes including "hot sea", "distant place" and "night song", and five International Short Films on "Yi Zhi Yi" and "Tian Wen" will also be shown. Professors and students from 22 universities of China and 4 international universities gathered to listen to master lectures, watch wonderful short films and learn together and exchange ideas.
The Shenzhen International Friendship-City University League (hereinafter referred to as the SIFCUL) is initiated by the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), in conjunction with nice other universities located in Shenzhen. Universities and colleges from Shenzhen International Friendship Cities are invited to join SIFCUL on a voluntary basis.
The objective of SIFCUL is to promote sustainable academic exchange and cooperation amongst universities of Shenzhen Friendship Cities, to enhance intercollegiate trust and friendship, to build a platform for sharing activities in education, research, and cultural development and exchange, and to make use of advanced knowledge and expertise of member universities to promote sustainable development of higher education.
