SUSTech held the symposium on strategy of mechanical engineering discipline development in SUSTech and summit forum of additive manufacture and robotics on campus from October 28 to October 30, 2017, which brought together more than 50 specialists in the field from top Chinese universities and research institutes to discuss the latest advances and development in manufacturing and robotics.
The seminar was organized into 7 workshops which included the symposium on strategy of mechanical engineering discipline development, Shenzhen key laboratory of additive manufacture seminar, additive manufacture technology and talent training road map, the Mid-term assessment conference of high-level science and engineering university, SUSTech Robotics Research Institute strategy seminar, additive manufacture and robotics summit forum and advanced manufacture technology summit forum.

The seminar kicked off on October 28. Among the most notable participants were Professor Xiong Youlun, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Xu Zhenghe, dean of School of Engineering at SUSTech and fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, who gave talks on the strategic development of the mechanical engineering major at SUSTech.
The chair of SUSTech Mechanical Engineering Department Rong Yiming introduced the current situation and future planning of the department, and listed some of the problems and challenges faced in teaching and research in this field, before putting forward new ideas and directions.

Xiong Youlun, alongside the other participating experts, fully affirmed the fast development and impressive achievements that the SUSTech Department of Mechanical Engineering has shown. He suggested that the university focus on strengthening the basic course education, increase the number of design courses, strengthen the communication with the industry, and create opportunities to bring students closer to the innovative enterprises in this field.
On the morning of October 29, the symposium on strategy of mechanical engineering discipline development in SUSTech and summit forum of additive manufacture and robotics was held. Xu Zhenghe presided over the opening ceremony, while Wang Susheng, director of the SUSTech Office of Strategic Planning, and Wen Li, director of the Advanced Manufacturing Department of Shenzhen Technology Innovation Commission, gave opening speeches.

During the opening ceremony, Wen Li and Xu Zhenghe unveiled the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Additive Manufacture of High Performance Material. Rong Yiming introduced the SUSTech Robotics Research Institute, and Xiong Youlun aims to develop the co-robots that he introduced in his presentation.

On the afternoon of the 29th the SUSTech Robotics Research Institute Strategy Seminar and Shenzhen Key Laboratory First Academic Conference were held. Experts and scholars conducted in-depth discussions on the future development of SUSTech Robotics Research Institute and key laboratories and made constructive suggestions on future development. Then, on the morning of October 30, the last two workshops - Advanced Manufacture Technology Summit Forum and summit forum of additive manufacture and robotics - concluded the event.
