On August 8 2017, the "2017 Asian and African University Information Technology Innovation Seminar" was held at SUSTech, with participants from 11 countries across Asia and Africa, including the Ministers of Education and relevant government officials. The theme of the meeting was "Higher Education Innovation Forum: University Cooperation and Innovation", creating a platform for the higher education institutions and universities to share experiences, under the guidance of the Nanjing Normal University and the UNESCO Higher Education Innovation Center International Cooperation as well as innovation strategies and outcomes.

The visitors hailed from Sri Lanka, Egypt, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Ghana, Malawi, Botswana, Cambodia, the United States, Pakistan and Oman, and were accompanied by SUSTech vice Chairperson of the University Council Li Fengliang and director of SUSTech’s Higher Education Research Center and the UNESCO Higher Education Innovation Center Li Ming. SUSTech’s Associate Vice President of International Affairs and Chief Operating Officer Lu Chun presided over the meeting.

On behalf of SUSTech, Li Fengliang warmly welcomed the guests and briefed them on the progress and initiatives of the first-class talents with "a sense of family, a global vision, a comprehensive literacy and innovation-centered abilities". Lu Chun then introduced the international partnerships that the university already has in place. Li Ming followed introducing the exploration and efforts of the UNESCO Higher Education Innovation Center since its inception to "introduce" and "explore new directions" for China and Shenzhen’s higher education systems.
Guest speakers also gave talks
Principal Lakshman Dissanayake, Vice President Abdel Nasser Singab and Vice President Som Ratana took to the stage to share their international cooperation and innovation strategies. Dissanayake talked about the University of Colombo’s pursuit of new educational methods, dedicated to providing students with excellent learning resources and quality service. Abdel Nasser Singab introduced the progress and achievements of Ain Shams University's cooperation with Chinese universities, as well as the research and practice of innovation that is the center of their focus there. Som Ratana then gave the audience a presentation on information technology and its applications at the Royal Phnom Penh University, identifying some of the challenges they faced. They discussed enthusiastically with the audience, sharing experiences and discussing future ways of building closer ties.
The forum was hosted by the SUSTech Higher Education Research Center and the UNESCO Higher Education Innovation Center.
The Center for Higher Education Research of the Southern University of Science and Technology, together with the UNESCO Center for Higher Education Innovation, organises regular forums focusing on higher education alongside Ethiopia, Djibouti and Egypt, as well as three Asian countries: Pakistan, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. Scope of cooperation: the Center has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Royal University of Phnom Penh, the Colombo University of Sri Lanka, the University of Science and Technology of Pakistan, the University of Ethiopia Addis Ababa, the University of Djibouti and the University of Ainhams, Egypt, which will provide educational information and training for officials in the field of higher education, as well as experts and scholars in the field of technology.
